Carmel@50: Official Endorsement Today!

“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…” (Heb. 12:2)

This Sunday we celebrate our 47th anniversary. Thank God for His blessings upon Mt Carmel B-P Church.

“On 27th July 1958 a young man, Uncle Robert Ong, gathered some children together in a HDB flat at 220-B Redhill Close and taught them Bible lessons. For more than two years all by himself, he continued this class every Sunday afternoon in his home. The attendance fluctuated between six and twelve. With much optimism he called it the 220-B Redhill Close Sunday School. The name was changed to Mt Carmel Sunday School on 4th December 1960. Some years later a shophouse in Lengkok Bahru was made available to house the Sunday School. At Lengkok Bahru Mt Carmel Gospel Mission was officially inaugurated in May 1967. It is from then that Mt Carmel today dates
her birth” (extracts from Carmel’s website).

Looking back, there is much to thank God for. Looking forward, there is much to trust God for. We have come this far by faith and God has blessed our congregation. Our founding members planted those seed of faith through which God is blessing us today.

Carmel@50 Document

Since the beginning of last year (2013) we have embarked on a congregational conversation to discern how God wants us to grow Carmel to the next level. We have sought feedbacks from Care Groups, focus groups and town hall discussions. We have come up with a draft Carmel@50 document which was presented at our ACM on 1 January this year. After some fine tunings the final version which has been approved by the Session is now ready for official endorsement by our congregation.

Carmel@50 is our collective aspiration with God’s help, to continue growing our church as we head towards our 50th Anniversary in 2017. Today, at our combined anniversary service, we officially endorse our Carmel@50 initiative.

Finishing Touches

Every worshipper has been given a pledge card in the shape of a leaf to indicate how he or she wishes to help out. There are 11 different items to choose from ranging from “serving as prayer warrior,” “improve our integration of newcomers” to “enhancing the quality of specific ministries.” By filling the pledge card you are pledging your support of Carmel@50. You are not committing to any specific area as of now, not yet. You are only indicating your interest to help in specific areas. We will get in touch with you and invite you to be part of action-groups that work out the details of each area.

These pledge cards will be put up on our “pledge tree” in front of the sanctuary in the week ahead. We hope to see the tree flourish with leaves over time, as more Carmelites pledge their support. The 12-page Carmel@50 document (on Carmel’s website) ends with these words: “But remember. It takes a total commitment by all members, under the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, to fulfil our vision of ‘Building a community of disciples which impacts the world for Christ… a community that is Spirit-formed, firmly rooted in Word and Prayer; bearing fruit in Worship of God, Fellowship with Believers, Service in Church, and Outreach to Community; so that together we can touch lives for Christ!’ Can we count on you to build such a community?” May our reply be a resounding “Yes”!

Let us all as one body of Christ avail ourselves to build a community of disciples here in Carmel. With our eyes “looking unto Jesus,” our hearts hidden with the Word of God, and our hands/feet doing His will, we prayerfully commit our aspiration to God.
