Prayer For A Cure (25 Apr)

Sing: How Great is Our God (World Edition)

Scripture

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of Him. (1 John 5:14-15)

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. (Psalm 46:1)

Scripted prayer

Dear God, You are our refuge and strength. You are very present – You are right here with us even when our surroundings seem chaotic and bleak. We thank You for this blessed assurance that gives us absolute and utmost confidence to approach Your throne, O Lord, and ask for anything at all, according to Your will. We know that if we ask for anything according to Your will, You will hear us – You will hear our earnest and desperate cries.

So Lord, today we come to You to ask for Your help. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy on this fallen world – we are all sinners in dire need of Your salvation. For far too long, we have revelled and taken pride in our medical and scientific advancements – from birth control pills to cloning to eugenics – the world has gotten ahead of itself and failed to recognise that all medical and scientific knowledge comes from You, O Lord, and it is only because You have allowed us a glimpse of the marvellous works that are Your creation, that we are able to discover more about the human body and what makes it tick. Indeed, You have sternly reminded us through this pandemic that we are not, and can never be, rulers of our own destiny. We need You, Lord, every hour of every day. We are truly sorry for sinning against You, Lord, and all we can do now is to confess our sins to You and surrender our lives to you anew. If it is Your will, please hasten the search for a cure and a vaccine. Please bless the medical researchers and scientists, who are working overtime and racing against the clock, with clear thinking and stamina to see their research through to fruition. We pray that the medical and scientific community around the world will work together and share their findings. Lord, we pray for new breakthroughs every day. Lord, help us please.

We also want to lift up the World Health Organisation (WHO) to You. It has been an extremely stressful and trying time for them – from having to deal with the initial outbreaks in China to containing the virus’ global spread, and now having to coordinate the containment efforts of every single government on the planet. Even though the US has pulled funding from the organisation, Lord, we know that You are Jehovah Jireh and You will provide. Lord, please sustain the organisation and supply them with the resources to meet the intense challenges of this special time. Please grant them stamina and foresight to allocate scarce resources wisely, and to decisively lead the charge in the war against the virus. We also pray that you protect WHO from further political stunts by world leaders coloured by global politics.

Lord, there is so much that is broken in this world, but we turn to You, Lord, the Author and Perfecter of our faith. You make our faith perfect, Lord, and we know that You will come through for us. We pray that this pandemic will bring people together and break down political and social divisions. But even if it doesn’t, O Lord, we pray that above all, Your name be glorified to the ends of the earth, as people of the world discover that only You and You alone can cure our brokenness and this virus, in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen!
