Prayer For Christians Everywhere (7 May)
Sing: Praise the Father, Praise the Son
13 “When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, 14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7:13-14)
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:13-16)
The Lord is not slow to fulfil his promise, as some understand slowness but is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9)
Search your heart and pray as the Spirit leads
Dear Heavenly Father, we acknowledge that You are the Lord of the sea and sky – You control the movement of the planets, the weather, natural disasters, human sickness, and our emotions – nothing escapes Your attention. We are sorry that we have become so full of ourselves that we have made You smaller than our problems. O Lord, our God, You command all time and space, from the very beginning till the very end – You are the God who was and is, and is to come! Have mercy on us, O Lord. We confess that we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed. We have not loved You with our whole heart, soul, mind and strength. We have lent ourselves to unkind words, unclean thoughts, fits of rage, and self-centredness. We have been wilfully blind to the hurt we have caused others and have ignored the pain of those close to us. We have passed by the hungry, poor, and oppressed, and failed to love our neighbour as ourselves. O God, in Your great mercy, please forgive our sins and free us from selfishness, that we may choose Your will and obey Your commandments above all else. Please help us to love You and Your commandments more than ourselves, dear Lord.
If the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? Lord, we know it can’t – it is no longer good for anything. So please, Lord, don’t let us as believers ever lose our “saltiness”, don’t let our lamps run out of oil, don’t let us disengage from gathering with Your children and praying, and please don’t ever let us lose the power of our testimonies with those around us. On the contrary, in this time of physical affliction and emotional darkness, please help Christians in every neighbourhood, community and city shine even more brightly like stars in the sky. May the hope that we have in Jesus Christ bring light to the world, like a city on a hill that can never be hidden. We pray that You will charge every Christian with a boost of courage and conviction to speak out boldly and tell of You, so that those around them will learn of You and be open to receiving You.
Lord, we know that an unprecedented event such as Covid-19 is a wake-up call to Your people, and we thank You that You have been patient with the world so far, while You call everyone to come to repentance. We want to pray for the salvation of every man, woman and child in the world today. We pray that through this crisis, their eyes will be opened to see their Creator and Maker, and that those who are searching will find You. Please use each Christian powerfully, Lord, wherever You have placed them. Please give them wisdom to discern the many opportunities this crisis presents, to spread the Good News. We pray that You will restore and refresh us in the joy of Your salvation in the gospel. We wait on You, Lord. We pray that all will come to repentance. Come, Holy Spirit, come! Let Your kingdom come, Your will be done, Lord, on earth as it is in heaven. In Your most precious Name, Amen.
