Respond To Jesus As His Faithful Servant (17 May)
Scripture text: Mark 6:14-29
Sermon podcast: Following Jesus: The Examples Of Herod And John The Baptist – Dn Lai Pak Wah on 17 May
Dear Father, thank You for Your Word and for speaking to us not just through commands and warnings, but through the lives of actual people who lived and walked this earth. Throughout the Old and New Testament, You have provided us with accounts and testimonies of real men and women who have met You and truly wrestled with obedience and with their faith. Thank You for speaking to us in this way and vividly illustrating to us what walking with You while still on this earth looks like.
We pray that we will learn from the life of King Herod – O Lord, may we never be like him. Even though his heart was stirred by the teachings of John the Baptist and he feared John and wanted to protect him, yet when push came to shove, his pride and vanity still won out, and he ended up doing something he did not want to do. Lord, please guard our hearts from temptation, addiction and self-centredness. Even though we may not be kings lavishing in palace entertainment and extravagance, we too run the risk of being ‘kings’ of our own castles. Too often we fall into the trap of thinking that our finances, our careers and even our relationships are ours to rule over and keep forever. Lord forgive us, we pray. We are sorry for thinking this way. Please give us wisdom, discernment, and honest and God-fearing friends to expose our blind spots and set us straight when we fail to take the gospel seriously. We also pray that You will grow our faith as we walk with You daily. We pray that through training (of discerning good from evil) and constant engagement with You, that we will be deeply and firmly rooted in Your Word. Please never let us inadvertently ‘behead’ those who love and honour You.
Lord, we know that life with You is a marathon, not a sprint, and there will be ups and downs as we journey with You through different phases of our lives. Through it all Lord, You must increase, and I must decrease. This is our earnest prayer. We entrust our work and our labour to You. Our lives and our loves, all of it – we surrender at Your feet, for they were always Yours to begin with. Thank You, Lord, for speaking to us this morning. We look forward to the day when we can meet You face to face and hear these words from You: “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things.” O Lord, help us be faithful and strong to the very end in Jesus name. Amen.
