Holy Week 2020

What is Holy Week?

While Advent is a period of great anticipation and celebration, Lent (the 40 days, excluding Sundays, leading up to Easter) is the solemn observance of the suffering and death of Jesus, ending with His glorious resurrection on Easter! Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday, the Sunday before Easter.

This Holy Week Prayer Guide is intended to guide us to be still in the presence of a Holy God Whom we worship and adore.

Look to our King!

This year, Covid-19 has loomed large in our minds. As a nation, we have been “fasting” from our usual daily living and have been sentenced to a greater level of isolation for the greater good. How have we prepared ourselves for this?

We thank God that our government monitors the situation vigilantly. They broadcast advisories, make provisions, and put in place boundaries to guide citizens and residents in daily living. And so every day, we wait and watch, and pray for countries, communities, churches and ourselves. We long for the flattening of the curve that would lift our spirits!

Likewise, Lent is that sombre period of giving up, of de-cluttering, spring cleaning or detoxifying of our spiritual lives to have more of God. Lent is the time of making sacrifices to go deeper with God. And Palm Sunday, like a circuit breaker, brings us to a halt to turn our eyes towards the coming King!

Using this prayer guide

PRAISEGive God glory for who He is. Praise Him! (Psalm 146)
REPENTAsk for forgiveness and for the strength to repent for your ways. (Psalm 51:1-3)
ASKAsk God for what is on your heart. (Philippians 4:6)
YIELDGive your prayers to God to answer in His way and in His time. Yield to His will. (Psalm 27:14)

Pause

Be still before God. Know that He is God! Desire to know God more as we enter into prayer.

  1. Find a quiet space or place. Remove all distractions.
  2. Write down your thoughts, including the nagging thoughts about all the work you need to do for the day.
  3. Breathe. Slowly.
    • As you breathe in, pray “He must increase.”
    • As you breathe out, pray “I must decrease.”
    • Breathe in and out again.
    • And again.

Pray: And so Lord God, in You and through faith in You, we enter Your presence with boldness and confidence. Holy Spirit, come and fill us afresh. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen!
