Maundy Thursday: Judged By The Unworthy
Praise Christ for taking our sins upon Himself!
Sing: Is He Worthy?
Read God’s Word
Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?” But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.
Now it was the governor’s custom at the festival to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus Barabbas. So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?” For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.
While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.”
But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.
“Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor.
“Barabbas,” they answered.
“What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?” Pilate asked.
They all answered, “Crucify him!”
“Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!”
All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”
Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
Watch: What is the Truth?
Jesus was falsely accused by unworthy men with deep religious knowledge who refused to acknowledge who He was. Their refusal to acknowledge Him was so strident that they accepted help from false witnesses.
Pilate was the governor and he had the authority to release Jesus if he wanted to. He had various opportunities to do the right thing, but he didn’t. He recognized that Jesus was innocent but he chose to release Barabbas instead.
Jesus paid the price so that we can have the power of the resurrection to do the right thing. May our station and positions in life be platforms for righteousness and not prisons of indecisive sinfulness. In what way do we continue to hold on to our incorrect ideas about God and allow them to cause us harm and pain?
Look at Jesus and know Him rightly, then ask God for His resurrection power to live in a manner worthy of our calling as His beloved children.
Lord Jesus, help me to really see You. Help me know You. In my own way, I have made You to be what I want rather than know You for who You really are. Forgive me Lord. I want to know You more and not be swayed by fake news that the evil one wants to put in my head. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. (John 8:44)
You are Good News and that’s what my heart truly desires. Cleanse my mind of the lies I have given a stronghold in my life, or the things that are untrue. Fill me Lord with the living and active word of God which is sharper than any two-edged sword. Pierce it deep within me to discern the thoughts and intentions of my heart. Just as Jesus was judged by unworthy men, one day I will stand before You to give an account for how I have lived this life. Let me be found to bring You glory and honour, in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen!
